Cocoon

The Beginning of Something

Representing the things we can create, share and contribute after a state of reflection or hibernation.

These beautifully paired works embody our universally entwined connection between nature, selfhood and community.

And that of our participation with this infinite, yet delicate kinship.

Exhibited at the ‘Red Hill Winter Solstice’ at Kerri Greens Winery,  Red Hill, Australia (Bunurong Country), 18-20 June 2021.

Community Chest

This inaugural collection of paired ‘Cocoons’ by Charlie Ryan represents the first series of twelve planned collections to be released on the Winter Solstice each year for twelve years — with no more than six pairs of cocoons created annually.

With the intention that half of the return from each artwork be enchested and considered as an endowment of patronage towards the support and production of the artists’ own creative projects within the community for the next year. Which will then be presented back within the publication of the following years’ collection.

Making this not only a chance to acquire one of these rare and beautiful paintings, but also the opportunity to take part in a greater journey with the artist.

The Veiled Painting III

At each of the artists’ more recent solo exhibitions, he has presented an artwork wrapped in brown paper and string, and auctioned the works with no minimum opening bid.

Titled the ‘Veiled Painting’, these artworks present an opportunity for a member of the community to own the experience of sharing a piece of art privately with the artist. And in this case of the paired works, the artist will keep one ‘Cocoon’, whilst the other is to be given to the winning bidder.

The catch is that the successful buyer cannot view the artwork until they own it. And unlike the other 10 available works, it can only receive a bid in person at the exhibition.

Congratulations to Reinier, who won the bidding for the ‘Veiled Painting III’. With a young girl named Emma starting the bidding at 5 cents, the final wrapped work was won by Reinier with an in-person bid of $900.
